ADIDAS VS. JORDAN UPDATE

The battle between Marcus Jordan and Adidas reached an impasse, and the son of Michael Jordan ended up costing the University of Central Florida its sporting goods contract.

Marcus Jordan wore Nike shoes in an exhibition game, and Adidas immediately announced it was ending its deal with the university.

"The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to Adidas," Adidas spokeswoman Andrea Corso wrote in an e-mail to the Associated Press. "As a result, we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them."

As Tim Dahlberg of the AP wrote, don't blame Marcus. Nike made his fake rolex family rich. If your family made millions with a Toyota dealership, would you be spotted in public buying a Chevy? Of course not. Marcus is just a pawn in a battle that's bigger than him.

Blame UCF - during recruiting, they said it would be fine for Marcus to wear Nikes - and blame Adidas' executives for some incredibly thin skin.

And this is a guarantee - Nike will be outfitting all of UCF's athletes in the near future.2 CENTS

Soccer is touted as a great sport for the very young, and it is. It gets kids running around, learning teamwork, with no expensive equipment.

It has a dirty little secret, however. At the advanced levels, the gentle game where kids get their orange slices after the game can turn vicious in a hurry.

The women's soccer game between Brigham Young and New Mexico last week showed that. ESPN's "SportsCenter" doesn't show women's soccer highlights very often between its contrived debate segments, but they knew they had a great video on their hands when they picked up the highlights of Lobos junior defender Elizabeth Lambert's ponytail- tugging, dirty tactics in a conference tournament game last week. If you haven't seen the highlights yet, just search on Google for her name. Lambert received a yellow card, but partly because of the embarrassment to the university, Lambert was replica clothing suspended indefinitely.

Lambert's antics, while over the top, weren't an isolated incident. She just got caught on camera. And here's a message for you parents who want a totally safe sporting outlet - it doesn't exist.

Sports teach kids a lot about competition, teamwork and fitness. Yet like life, sports isn't always fair. You have to teach your kids that, too.GREAT FOR THE GATOR BOWL

This is the time of year
embroidered patches when it gets interesting to look at all the bowl projections. There's a lot of football to be played, but for the Gator Bowl, the matchup is coming into focus very quickly in the final year of their ACC vs. Big East/Notre Dame deal.

With Navy's victory over the Fighting Irish on Saturday, this Navy town received a gift. If Notre Dame (6-3) wins one more game - at Pitt, at home vs. UConn or at Stanford - the Irish should be coming to Jacksonville. Thanks to that third loss, the Bowl Championship Series will almost certainly pass.

And the ACC's pool of teams is fairly deep this year. Georgia Tech and Boston College or Clemson are on the fast track to the title game and a BCS berth, which would leave Miami or Virginia Tech as obvious choices for the Gator Bowl. Either would be great for TV, and tickets should go rather quickly. It's a win-win before the Gator Bowl leaves for the greener pastures of the SEC and Big Ten next season. Compi
